Background of the Study

Obesity has become a significant public health concern globally, with fast food consumption playing a key role in the rising prevalence of obesity among young people. In Kano State, as in many parts of Nigeria, the consumption of fast food has increased significantly in recent years, particularly among university students who are exposed to urbanized lifestyles. Fast foods are typically high in calories, unhealthy fats, and sugars, which, when consumed frequently, can lead to weight gain and obesity (Abubakar et al., 2024). University students, due to factors such as academic stress, peer pressure, and limited cooking skills, are particularly prone to unhealthy eating habits. This study will examine the relationship between fast-food consumption and obesity prevalence among university students in Kano State, with the aim of understanding the contributing factors and recommending interventions.

Statement of the Problem

Despite increasing awareness of the health risks associated with obesity, the prevalence of obesity continues to rise among university students in Kano State. Fast food, with its convenience and affordability, is often the preferred choice for students, contributing to unhealthy eating habits. This study aims to investigate how fast-food consumption affects obesity rates among university students and identify the underlying factors contributing to the high consumption of fast foods in this demographic.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the relationship between fast-food consumption and obesity prevalence among university students in Kano State.
  2. To identify factors influencing the high consumption of fast food among university students in Kano State.
  3. To recommend strategies to reduce obesity rates among university students through dietary interventions in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. How does fast-food consumption affect obesity prevalence among university students in Kano State?
  2. What factors contribute to the high consumption of fast foods among university students in Kano State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce obesity rates among university students in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher fast-food consumption is associated with a higher prevalence of obesity among university students in Kano State.
  2. Peer influence, stress, and convenience are significant factors contributing to high fast-food consumption among university students in Kano State.
  3. Educational and behavioral interventions will reduce obesity rates and fast-food consumption among university students in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on university students in Kano State, analyzing dietary habits and obesity prevalence. Limitations may include difficulty in accurately assessing fast-food consumption patterns and potential biases in self-reported dietary behaviors.

Definitions of Terms
